British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
